Welcome to Sin on Skin – Halifax’s Trusted Tattoo Studio
Whether you’re getting your very first tattoo or adding to your collection, choosing the right studio and artist matters. At Sin on Skin, we’re known for clean lines, custom designs, award-winning realism, and a welcoming, professional environment.
This guide will walk you through every step of the tattoo process so you feel confident, prepared, and excited for your new ink.
1. Choosing the Right Tattoo Studio
Not all studios are the same. Here’s what to look for when picking a tattoo shop in Halifax:
2. Choosing the Right Tattoo Design
Even if you’re unsure what you want, these tips help narrow it down:
⭐ Start with meaning
Does the tattoo represent someone you love, a memory, an interest, or simply aesthetic art you enjoy?
⭐ Look for inspiration and references
Bring reference images to show your artist — this helps them see what you're envisioning for your tattoo. It can show them the detail level you like, the style you like, even the coloring/shading techniques you like best. Your artist will then be able to do something custom and unique for you.
⭐ Think about long-term aging
Bold lines, solid saturation, proper placement and aftercare help tattoos last a lifetime.
⭐ Match style to your idea
Some ideas look best in realism, some in minimal linework, some in colour. Ask your artist which style makes your design shine.
This guide will walk you through every step of the tattoo process so you feel confident, prepared, and excited for your new ink.
1. Choosing the Right Tattoo Studio
Not all studios are the same. Here’s what to look for when picking a tattoo shop in Halifax:
- ✔ Licensed & Safe Workspace
- A professional studio follows strict sterilization and cross-contamination protocols, uses single-use needles, and maintains a spotless environment.
- ✔ Experienced Artists
- Check portfolios for consistency, clean linework, smooth shading, and healed results—not just fresh tattoos. Too many rely on "fake photos". Photos that are over processed and filtered to the point you aren't seeing the real tattoo. This creates confusion about what's real and can be done on the skin.
- ✔ Style Match - Different artists specialize in different styles:
- realism
- black & grey
- fine line
- portraits
- cover-ups
- color
- traditional
- anime
- lettering
- ✔ Real Reviews
- Local reviews tell you a lot about a client's experience, comfort, and artist's professionalism.
- If you're in Halifax, Sin on Skin offers a team of skilled artists with decades of combined experience in multiple tattoo styles.

3. Picking the Perfect Placement
Where you place your tattoo affects: ✔ pain level ✔ healing ✔ sun exposure ✔ how the lines age ✔ amount of detail possible ✔ longevity ✔ whether you have a guarantee |
Most popular areas:
|
Pain levels vary by area:
• Ribs, spine, elbow, neck, and stomach = higher pain
• Forearms, upper arms, lower back, calves and thighs = easier spots for most people
• Ankles, hands, collar bone, and fingers = more sensitive + fade faster
Your artist can recommend what works best based on design, size and detail.

4. How to Prepare for Your Tattoo Appointment
A smooth session starts with simple prep:
✔ Sleep well the night before
✔ Eat a solid meal 1–2 hours before
✔ Stay hydrated
✔ Avoid alcohol for 24 hours when possible
✔ Don’t take blood thinners unless prescribed
✔ Make sure NONE of your current or recently stopped medications interfere with healing or your ability to get a tattoo.
✔ Wear comfortable clothing that exposes the tattoo area
Pro tip: Bring a support person, headphones, snacks, and a drink for longer sessions.
5. What to Expect During Your Appointment
Here’s the step-by-step:
- Design discussion, review & placement - You and your artist confirm size, final details, and stencil placement.
- Skin preparation - The area is shaved, cleaned, and sanitized.
- Tattooing begins - You’ll feel vibration and scratching sensations.
- Breaks - You can take breaks for bathroom, water, stretching, or snacks, just let us know
- Wrap & instructions - Your artist will provide personal aftercare guidance and a take-home copy or online link. They will then apply a protective dressing, either a regular bandage or 2nd skin.
6. Tattoo Aftercare (The Most Important Part)
Proper aftercare protects your tattoo and ensures it heals without any issues. When caring for your tattoo, always be very careful of any products you touch or use prior to cleaning the tattoo.
If you use products containing: Hyaluronic acid (HA), heavy fragrance or coloring, Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), Beta-Hydroxy Acids (BHAs), Retinoids/Retinol, High alcohol content, or Medicated ointments, they will damage your new ink/hinder healing/strip color/ and possibly lead to infection/irritation.
Your artist will provide you with an online link to our detailed aftercare and/or a paper copy to take home with you.
Day 1–5
Regular Aftercare:
2nd skin Aftercare:
Day 5-14
Day 14 on
Your artist will provide detailed aftercare tailored to you, your tattoo size and placement. Keep in mind that your personal skin type and immune system health will determine how quickly the tattoo will heal.

Day 1–5
Regular Aftercare:
- Keep your bandage on as advised
- Regular Aftercare - Wash gently with warm water & fragrance-free soap - DOVE unscented
- Apply a TINY amount of A&D ointment (a grain of rice amount covers approx 3-4 inches)
2nd skin Aftercare:
- Leave on for the timeframe your artist recommends, no washing or ointment needed at this stage.
- Remove at day 1-5, depending on fluid levels in the bandage, and instructions from your tattoo artist. If it's not punctured, leaking or causing irritation, then let it do its job and leave it on for the proper timeframe.
Day 5-14
- Tattoo may peel and flake - normal
- Do NOT pick or scratch
- No gyms or excessive working of the freshly tattooed area
- Avoid pools, hot tubs, saunas, and sun
Day 14 on
- The tattoo will look healed on the surface; however, it's still healing underneath. It can take up to 6 months to heal completely; large and full-color tattoos tend to take longer.
- A&D isn't needed, so please start to moisturize
- Always use sunscreen on healed tattoos, NO EXCEPTIONS!
Your artist will provide detailed aftercare tailored to you, your tattoo size and placement. Keep in mind that your personal skin type and immune system health will determine how quickly the tattoo will heal.
