At Sin on Skin Tattoo Studio, we’ve been tattooing in Halifax longer than any other studio in the city. With decades of combined experience, we know that a great tattoo isn’t just about how it looks the day it’s finished — it’s about how it heals, ages, and holds up over time. This page explains our tattoo guarantee, realistic healing expectations, and why certain tattoo locations or styles cannot be guaranteed. It also works alongside our in-depth Halifax Tattoo Guide, helping you make informed decisions before committing to your tattoo.

Our Tattoo Guarantee at Sin on Skin Tattoo Studio. All artists at Sin on Skin Tattoo Studio offer a guarantee on their own artwork, except for specific areas of the body and certain tattoo styles outlined below. Our guarantee applies only to artist-related defects, not to factors beyond an artist’s control. Tattooing is performed on living canvas, and healing outcomes can vary greatly from person to person.

What Is Considered an Artist Defect?
Artist defect refers to issues that occur despite proper application and proper aftercare. Examples may include:
  • Small areas where ink did not fully saturate
  • Minor light spots visible after healing
  • Missed areas caused by swelling during the tattoo process
  • Sections affected by involuntary skin movement
If any of these issues are noticed after the tattoo has fully healed, touch-ups related to artist's defect are handled directly between you and your tattoo artist. This is the responsibility of the artist, not the studio as a whole.

What Our Tattoo Guarantee Does Not Cover.
While we stand behind our artists’ workmanship, there are important limitations to any tattoo guarantee.
Normal Tattoo Fading Over Time. All tattoos fade gradually. This is unavoidable and influenced by:
  • Sun exposure
  • Natural skin regeneration
  • The body’s immune response
  • Aging of the skin
Even the best tattoos will soften and change over time. This is a normal part of tattoo aging and is not considered a defect.
Improper Aftercare or Healing Issues.  Failure to follow aftercare instructions can result in:
  • Excessive fading
  • Patchy ink retention
  • Scarring or texture changes
  • Premature ink loss
Tattoos that have not been cared for properly are not covered by our guarantee. Self-inflicted or Environmental Damage is not considered a touch up. Our guarantee does not apply to tattoos affected by:
  • Picking or scratching during healing
  • Chemical exposure
  • Burns, cuts, or injuries
  • Excessive friction or trauma
  • Self inflcited damage
  • Not following aftercare and or using non approved products on your tattoo

Understanding Tattoo Healing & Color Changes.
When a tattoo is first completed, ink sits in the first and second layers of skin, making it appear extremely bold and vibrant.
Why Tattoos Look Brighter When Fresh : Fresh tattoos appear brighter because:
  • Ink is visible through multiple skin layers
  • The skin is temporarily inflamed
  • Outer layers have not yet regenerated
Once healing is complete, it is normal for:
  • Colors to appear lighter
  • Blacks to soften slightly
  • Fine details to settle
A healed tattoo will never look identical to a fresh tattoo — and it shouldn’t. This change is expected and healthy.

Why Certain Tattoo Areas Cannot Be Guaranteed
Different areas of the body respond differently to tattooing. Some areas are more prone to fading, ink loss, or healing complications.
This information is also covered in greater depth in our Halifax Tattoo Guide, which we recommend reviewing before choosing placement.
Common Healing Challenges by Area. Some body areas:
  • Shed skin more rapidly
  • Experience constant movement
  • Are exposed to friction or pressure
  • Receive frequent sun exposure
Because of these factors, consistent healing cannot always be guaranteed.

High-Risk Tattoo Placement Areas
Hand & Finger Tattoos ~ Hands and fingers are among the most challenging areas to tattoo due to:
  • Constant washing
  • Frequent movement
  • Thin skin
  • Rapid cell turnover

Finger / Foot tattoos ~ often require maintenance and may fade unevenly, even with proper care

Feet, Ankles & Toes. These areas experience:
  • Pressure from standing and walking
  • Friction from footwear
  • Swelling during healing
  • Skin shedding your entire life
Ink retention in these areas is unpredictable.

Palms, Soles & Inner Lip Tattoos ~ These areas regenerate skin extremely quickly. Tattoos here are often temporary by nature and are not guaranteed.
  • Elbows, Knees & High-Movement Areas.
Constant bending and stretching increase the risk of:
  • Blowouts
  • Patchy healing
  • Premature fading

Tattoo Styles with Longevity Limitations
Fine Line & Minimalist Tattoos. Fine line tattoos can be beautiful, but are more sensitive to:
  • Placement choice
  • Skin type
  • Natural ink spread over time
  • Fading and falling apart more aggressively than a traditional tattoo
Some maintenance may be required to preserve clarity. Single-Needle or Ultra-Light Designs: Very light tattoos may not age as visibly as bolder designs and may fade faster depending on placement and lifestyle. The lighter the tones, the easier it is to fade as you age.

Individual Skin Differences & Healing. Every client’s skin reacts differently. Healing and longevity are influenced by:
  • Skin thickness and elasticity
  • Immune response
  • Skin type (dry, watery, stretchy, etc)
  • Age
  • Activity level
  • Occupation
Some clients retain ink exceptionally well, while others may experience fading despite perfect aftercare.

Choosing the Right Tattoo Placement. Before committing to a tattoo location, ask yourself the following:
Can This Area Rest During Healing?
  • Healing requires reduced movement and minimal friction.
Is This a High-Stress or High-Use Area?
  • Constant movement or exposure increases healing risks.
Will My Job Affect Healing? Examples include:
  • Dishwashers with hand tattoos
  • Construction workers with wrist tattoos
  • Healthcare workers with frequent handwashing
Am I Prepared for Possible Touch-Ups?
  • Some placements require long-term maintenance due to location choice.

Our Commitment to Education & Transparency:
At Sin on Skin Tattoo Studio, we prioritize honesty over unrealistic promises. Our artists will always:
  • Discuss placement risks
  • Explain style longevity
  • Answer healing questions
  • Refer you to our Halifax Tattoo Guide for deeper education

Final Thoughts on Tattoo Guarantees:
A tattoo is a collaboration between artist and client. Skill and technique matter — but so do placement, aftercare, and lifestyle. Our guarantee protects against true artist defects while respecting the realities of tattooing living skin.
If you have questions about placement, healing, or tattoo longevity, speak with your artist before booking.

Hand / Finger Tattoos ~ No Guarantee

Issues:
This is a bad spot to heal. You can't stop using them long enough for a proper heal. Hands also shed throughout your lifetime, making it impossible for a hand tattoo to stay solid.  The constant use of your hands affects the length of heal, quality of heal, and outcome after the healing process has ended.

We DO NOT  guarantee anything done on the hand, finger, palms or wrist crease due to issues with healing a tattoo in those areas.  Your hands shed throughout your life; this causes instability in the lines and color, causes line blow out, EXTREME fading, total loss of line work in spots and color loss.  Black tends to hold up better over time than color, sides of hands never seem to hold ink properly - fading during healing and line loss.  If your hands are your job don't put a tattoo there - "When you use it ~ you lose it". Every hand tattoo WILL require touch-ups to keep it fresh and solid.

Elbow ~ No Guarantee

Generally, a bad area to heal due to its necessary role in our daily lives, answering phones, driving, all use your elbow which in turns affects the healing and heal time due to the constant stretching and pulling of the skin.  It's an area prone to pain, bruising, and swelling. Joint area tattoos tend not to heal as well as other body parts.

You have to be aware of how much you're doing right after an elbow tattoo, you may find it to be really sore, swollen, bruised, or find the joints feel stiff for days after.  You'll have to wait on any upper body workouts for a week or so until it's healed enough to deal with that amount of strain. The area is under constant strain every time you move; this will affect the length of time to heal your tattoo as well as the quality of your finished product.

Behind the Ear ~ No Guarantee

Issues:
Tattoos done in this area tend to not hold ink as well and are prone to fading and color loss.  You need to be careful about what you use when getting a tattoo here.  Hair product can really irritate a new tattoo as well as phone use which can cause a delay in healing or issues with the overall heal.  You may also find your tattoo will fade, lose color, as well as line blow-out or loss.

Side of Wrist / Crease Line of Wrist ~ No Guarantee

Issues:
This a is a Bad spot to heal. The constant pulling and stretching effects the length of heal, quality of heal, and outcome after the healing process.  Many clients find they tend to lean on counters, steering wheels, any counter top they can. During healing that poses an issue: a fresh tattoo will be exposed to whatever that surface had been previously. It also causes wear and chafing on your fresh tattoo while it's trying to heal.

It's one of those areas that usually requires a second coloring to keep it solid and dark, sometimes more.  The side of wrist and crease line get abused constantly during a normal day, every time your hand moves it pulls the skin.  This will sometimes cause areas to take longer to heal and can cause cracking during the healing process, this may cause damage to line work or color.

Foot Tattoos ~ No Guarantee

Issues:
Around the ankle, sides of feet, top of the foot, toes and around the heel area; all seem to be effected quickly after a tattoo.  Tattoos in theses areas can fade, blow out, have a complete color loss in spots, loss of line work (small spots to large gaps). Anything here WILL require touch ups to uphold the tattoos integrity. Cover ups can also take longer in this area and may require extra sessions to ensure the coverage of your old tattoo.

Things to remember....
~ Shoes and socks can chafe and disrupt healing
~ Make sure your wearing clean shoes so you don't expose your new tattoo to the dirt, bacteria and whatever else may be living in there.
~ Cover-ups don't hold as well on feet, you'll probably be looking at an additional session to ensure proper coverage of your old tattoo.
Tips and tricks to try...
~ Try to stay off your feet to prevent additional swelling after your appointment
~ No closed shoes or socks that can damage the tattoo while healing
~ If swellings occurs, put a bit of ice in a baggie and hold next to foot

Non Guaranteed Styles..

Watercolor Tattoos

The colors will not heal the same way they go in for most watercolor designs. If they are not done a certain way, the colors will fade out into your natural skin tone quite quickly. Yellows, Oranges, pale tones are the worst offenders for fading.

Fine-line Tattoos

This style tends to cut the skin more than deposit the ink, which can create more redness and swelling. These finer lines won't last or hold up as well over time. Anything in this style is considered at your own risk and non guaranteed.

Stippling / dot-work styles

This style is beautiful and delicate when done; however, those tiny dots will eventually come together and create a more solid appearance over time. This style will not hold up well or last a lifetime for you.
