Learn the best tattoo aftercare tips from Sin on Skin Tattoo Studio in Halifax, NS. Keep your new ink vibrant, healthy, and beautiful for years to come.
💧 Why Tattoo Aftercare Matters
Your tattoo isn’t finished when the artist puts down his machine — aftercare is just as important as the tattooing process itself. Proper healing means your ink will stay vibrant and defined for years to come.
At Sin on Skin Tattoo Studio in Halifax, we provide detailed aftercare instructions for every client, ensuring your tattoo heals perfectly the first time. We'll send you home with all the information you need to care for your tattoo, including the ointment to help it heal.
☀️ The First Few Weeks
- No scratching or picking: Even if it itches or flakes, don’t touch it — this is part of the normal healing process.
- Avoid direct sunlight: UV rays can fade fresh ink fast. Keep it covered if you’re outside.
- Skip swimming: Pools, hot tubs, and the ocean can introduce bacteria and slow healing.
🖤 Long-Term Tattoo Care
- Even after your tattoo is fully healed, caring for it will help it look brand new:Moisturize regularly. Once healed, do it daily to keep your skin healthy and ink vibrant.
- Use only recommended products from the studio or your artist for the best results.
- Use SPF 30+ sunscreen on your tattoo every time you’re in the sun - no exceptions. Your skin is a window to your tattoo; if it's "dirty" (tanned or burnt) that affects the result and appearance.
- Stay hydrated — healthy skin means healthier-looking tattoos
- The better the aftercare, the better the result! Take time to look after your fresh ink, and it will last a lifetime.

📍What to know about Film Bandage Aftercare
The film bandage used on your new tattoo will be worn for 3-5 days unless you have to remove it early due to irritation or damage to 2nd skin. During that time certain rules must be followed for optimal healing and results. If not followed, you VOID all guarantees.
DO NOT wrap the area where the film is applied, let it breathe through the bandage. Keep the bar of soap you will use for cleaning your tattoo in a container or baggie to keep it free of dirt, bacteria, and dust. You want to keep it as clean as possible and only TOUCH your soap and tattoo with CLEAN HANDS!!!
DO NOT go to the GYM for approximately 3 weeks to allow the skin to heal before you start to pull and stretch the area; which can cause stretch marks in the tattoo. You can also pick up bacteria that can cause infection or irritation at a gym, due to a lack of cleanliness and disinfection of equipment. Showering is allowed, but DO NOT allow water jets to beat directly onto the tattoo/film bandage area or submerge it in hot water. We want to prevent it from sweating under the film.
Blood Plasma & Lymph Fluid may form under the film; this is completely normal and will accelerate the healing process. After 2-3 days the plasma & lymph fluid will begin to dry, and at this point you should NOT PEEL or PIERCE the film bandage. It's normal to see some fluid build up beneath the film bandage but if the bandage begins to leak or become uncomfortable, you must remove the bandage and follow the standard aftercare instructions.
DO NOT
- Leave a damaged film bandage on your tattoo, it can breed bacteria, which can lead to irritation/inflammation and potential damage. You must monitor your tattoo carefully for the first few weeks of healing.
- If the film is causing you any discomfort or irritation, please consult with your artist immediately for advice or stop by the studio. If you're unable to speak with your artist, then the film should be removed, and you should start the standard care method immediately.
NO:
- Swimming pools, hot tubs, or Jacuzzis. Avoid Steam baths, Saunas, Tanning salons, and sunbathing in general for at least 1 month.
- After your tattoo is healed, you must wear a high-level sunblock/sunscreen with a +50 SPF (minimum). The sun will damage your tattoo and prematurely fade it, so you must protect your ink when in the sun or risk damaging it.
ALLERGY:
Adhesive allergy is a possibility with this type of bandage. Film Bandages can cause allergic reactions to those with adhesive allergies. If you experience an allergic reaction, remove immediately and start standard aftercare. Contact your artist or a medical professional if the reaction is severe for support/guidance.
- If redness and irritation or even blistering occur under or around the bandage, then remove it right away. Do so carefully and slowly, using plenty of soap and warm/hot water. Remove it in the shower when possible; it can be easier to remove when in a high-heat/steam environment. You can also take antihistamines if necessary to alleviate any discomfort.
